Wrestling Vies For ACC Championship on Saturday

    COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team, which finished 17-5 and a perfect 5-0 in the ACC in the regular season, will compete for the 2007 ACC Championship on Saturday, March 3 in Raleigh, N.C. The event begins at 11:00 a.m. at the Reynolds Coliseum. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and college students with ID. Children 10 and under are free. The ACC will also offer fans the ability to watch the semifinal and championship matches live on ACC Select.

    Terps Ready For ACC Championship
    • Maryland, which finished the 2006-07 campaign with the best regular season in school history, will compete for the 2007 ACC Championship on Saturday, March 3 at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C. The tournament begins at 11:00 a.m. with the finals slated for 7:00 p.m.
    • The Terrapins completed its most successful regular season in school history as they went 17-5 and 5-0 in the ACC.
    • The win total matches the program record established back in 1990. • Maryland's .773 winning percentage is the best ever as it surpassed 1990's mark of .739 (17-6).
    • The 2007 season also marked the first time since 1974 that the Terps went perfect in the conference and won the regular season dual championship.
    • Maryland went a perfect 10-0 on the road this season and was 4-2 in neutral duals.

    Wrestlers of the Week
    • Maryland wrestlers earned five ACC Wrestler of the Week nods during the regular season in 11 weeks, earning 45 percent of the bids.
    • Senior Jason Kiessling was tabbed twice with the award on December 4 and January 15.
    • Junior Charlie Pinto was the first Terp to win the honor this season as he garnered the accolade on November 20.
    • Sophomore James Knox was honored on January 29 while redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor grabbed the final award on February 19.

    Tournament Tidbits
    • The last time Maryland won the ACC Tournament was in 1973. The Terps have more tournament titles than any other school with 18. North Carolina is right behind with 17.
    • The Terps under Sully Krouse won every ACC Tournament from 1956-1973.
    • NC State or North Carolina has won every ACC Tournament since 1978.
    • From 1974-1977, Virginia won three of four conference titles.
    • Two wrestlers slated to compete on Saturday have earned All-ACC honors in the past. Junior Andrew Schlaffer was the 149 pound champion last season.
    • Senior Jason Kiessling earned all-conference accolades in 2004.

    Perfect In Conference
    • The Terps have four wrestlers that finished with an unblemished record in the ACC.
    • Sophomore Alex Krom, who became a mainstay at 141 for Maryland midseason, went 2-0 in the ACC with his wins coming against Mike Rappo of North Carolina and Matt Rosen of Virginia Tech.
    • Senior Jason Keissling and freshman Mike Letts both went 4-0 in the conference.
    • Redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor started and won every ACC match this season going 5-0. Three of his team-best 12 falls came in conference play.

    Been There Before
    • In the lineup this year for the Terps are three wrestlers who placed at the tournament last season.
    • Junior Andrew Schlaffer won the 149 pound championship last year for the Terps while sophomores James Knox (125) and Alex Krom (141) both finished third in their respective weight classes.
    • Senior Jason Kiessling won All-ACC accolades in 2004.

    Local Flavor
    • Of the Terps' 10 starters, five hail from the state of Maryland and four are from nearby Pennsylvania which borders the Old Line State to the north.
    • Freshman Jon Kohler lives closest to the University as his hometown of Annapolis, the state's capital, is just 27.4 miles away. Sophomore Alex Krom lives the farthest away as Easton, Pa. is 169.3 miles away from College Park.
    • The average distance in miles of the 10 starters from College Park is just 88.4 miles.

    Quite a Turnaround
    • Head coach Pat Santoro has put a winning spirit back into the Maryland wrestling program the past two seasons.
    • After not winning an ACC dual and claiming just seven overall wins in his first two seasons, Santoro has led the Terps to 25 wins in the last two years and a 9-1 mark in the ACC.
    • Santoro's 17 wins this season was more than he had in his first three seasons all together as he was 15-32-1.
    • The Terps completed the best regular season in school history in 2006-07 as it went 17-5.

    On a Roll...
    • A couple of Maryland grapplers head into the ACC Tournament with winning fresh in their minds.
    • Senior Jason Kiessling has won 11 of 12 matches and 14 of 16 heading into Saturday. His only loss in 2007 came against Mike Cannan of American, an 8-4 setback.
    • Freshman Mike Letts has won 11 of 13 matches dating back to the Southern Scuffle and redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor has won1 3 of 14 dating back to the same tournament.
    • Senior Jerry Afari has won six consecutive matches which began on January 20.
    • Sophomore James Knox has won five of six heading into ACCs.
