In a reversal of fortunes from last weekend's ECAC Championships overtime loss to Bucknell, the University of Maryland women's water polo team netted two in the extra period to take down the Bison 8-6 today in Princeton, N.J. The Terrapins recovered from an early Bucknell lead to go into halftime tied at four, and matched goals with the Bison until the decisive overtime period.
Sophomore Elizabeth Hopkins led the Maryland offense with three goals and three steals, two steals coming in the overtime period to clinch the win. Rachel Jordan added two goals of her own, and Christen Vagts contributed one goal and four steals to the Terps' effort.
Senior goalie Marissa Corwin anchored Maryland's defense, blocking 11 while allowing only four goals scored in the final three quarters and overtime period. Sophomore Ashleigh Jobson started in the cage, blocking one and allowing two in the first quarter.
"We gave up some cheap goals early in the game," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer, "but we followed up with good defense that took us to overtime. We came out with a lot of energy in the overtime period, and turned turnovers into goals."
The Terps hope to carry this momentum into tonight's game against Princeton at 7 p.m.
Maryland Goals: Elizabeth Hopkins (3), Rachel Jordan (2), Christen Vagts (1), Laurel Laidlaw (1), Shannon Simerly (1)
