The University of Maryland women's water polo team topped the Pacific Tigers 12-7 today at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton, California. Up by only two at halftime, the Terps shot past the Tigers in the third quarter with a five-goal performance.
Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said, "We started a little bit slow on the defensive end, but we managed to kick up the defense which created counterattack opportunities."
Spearheading the Terps' offensive onslaught was sophomore Rachel Jordan with five goals. Jordan's classmate Blaise Stanicic contributed a pivotal three goals, and Elizabeth Hopkins, Christen Vagts, Bryndis Klein, and Orsi Ferenczy rounded out Maryland's scoring.
Between the pipes, sophomore goalie Ashleigh Jobson blocked five while allowing only three goals scored in the first half. Junior Anna Gossett took over in the second half, contributing two saves to the effort.
Salyer commented, "UOP is a good, young team like we are. It was good to go into their pool and get a win."
The Tigers were the Terps' second victim in the first three games of their eight-game California trip. The win brings Maryland's record to 10-12, and the team hopes to carry momentum into Friday's game against nationally-ranked No. 7 UC Davis.
The Terps return home to CWPA play on March 30 and 31, matching up against Bucknell and Princeton.
