It Runs in the Phipps Family
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's Michael Phipps earned this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week honors, announced by the league on Monday. Phipps helped the ninth-ranked Terrapins post a 2-0 record on the week, including a 14-8 victory over league opponent No. 11 North Carolina on Saturday.
Phipps scored on five of six shots in Maryland's two games last week, while all six shots were on goal. In addition, the senior attackman tallied four assists, all of which he collected in the Terps' 18-3 win over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon at Ludwig Field.
Against Mount St. Mary's, Phipps got the ball rolling for the Terps with his first of three goals at the 11:52 mark. Maryland again came out quickly in the third quarter with Phipps finishing off a seven-point game with a pair of goals and an assist in the first five minutes of the period. In all, the veteran posted his third career hat trick and a career-tying four assists.
Phipps had another solid performance against No. 11 North Carolina on Saturday, assisting his Terrapins to the 14-8 win Saturday afternoon at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium. The attackman built the lead to 2-0 at nearly the 10-minute mark en route to tallying two goals for the winning effort. Phipps extended his point scoring streak to 10 games with his nine-point week. He now has nine multi-goal and 18 multi-point games in his career.
Phipps currently ranks fifth in goals per game and fourth in assists per game among ACC players.
