Six Maryland gymnasts received awards at the 2007 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) awards banquet, held Thursday night at the University of Maryland Inn & Conference Center in College Park, Md.
Brandi George (Orlando, Fla.) received five awards, including the prestigious EAGL Rookie of the Year honor. She made first team All-EAGL on balance beam, floor exercise and all-around and second team All-EAGL on vault. Gretchen Kittelberger (Webster, N.Y.) was recognized as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Angela Ferg (Bel Air, Md.) was named first team All-EAGL on vault surpassing last year's second team honor. On the uneven bars, Rachel Colon made first team All-EAGL and Allison Dama (Lansing, Mich.) made second team All-EAGL. Talia Tossone (Virginia Beach, Va.) received second team honors on the balance beam.
The fifteen Terps named to the EAGL All-Academic team were honored at the banquet. Brandi George and Candice King were also recognized for receiving weekly EAGL honors during the season. George was named Rookie of the Week three times during the regular season on March 27, February 20 and February 13. King was the Specialist of the Week on February 13.
The EAGL Gymnast of the Year was given to West Virginia's Janae Cox. Cox was also named Outstanding Senior gymnast.
Maryland will compete in the 2007 EAGL Championship Friday at 6:00 p.m. at home in the Comcast Center. The Terps look to improve their Regional Qualifying Score in order to qualify for the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship hosted by the West Virginia on April 14.
