The University of Maryland women's water polo team lost a tight overtime game to division rival Bucknell today at the ECAC Championships. The Bison led the whole game until the Terps evened the score at seven in the fourth quarter. Bucknell held Maryland scoreless in the overtime period while scoring twice to bring the final score to 9-7.
Freshman Shannon Simerly led Terrapin scorers with three goals. Sophomores Rachel Jordan and Christen Vagts added one and two goals, respectively, and junior co-captain Allie Houseal netted one for the Terps.
Senior goalie Marissa Corwin anchored Maryland's defense for the first three quarters, blocking six while allowing six goals scored. Sophomore Ashleigh Jobson blocked three and allowed three in the fourth and overtime periods. Junior Anna Gossett played the final 40 seconds in the cage, adding one block.
The Terps were able to tie up the score by the end of regulation without the help of starters Elizabeth Hopkins or Blaise Stanicic, who fouled out.
Maryland will face Bucknell again on March 10 at noon in Princeton, N.J. The Bison are now 2-0 against the Terps this season.
