Maryland Water Polo Sails By George Washington

March 7, 2007

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland women's water polo team overwhelmed CWPA Southern Division George Washington 11-4 tonight at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium. The Terrapins shot off to a 3-0 first quarter lead that the Colonials were unable to recover from, held scoreless by the Terp defense in both the first and third quarters.

Sophomore Elizabeth Hopkins paced Maryland's offense, scoring four in the first half. Freshman Shannon Simerly contributed two goals of her own, as well as a fourth-quarter pass to classmate Sarah Ivry for a goal. Senior Orsi Ferenczy capped off the Terrapin win with a goal in the final ten seconds of the match-up.

Sophomores Blaise Stanicic, Bryndis Klein, and Rachel Jordan also scored for Maryland.

Tonight's win was the second straight for the Terps against George Washington, following last week's 7-6 triumph.

This Saturday the Terps head to Princeton, N.J. to face division rivals Bucknell and Princeton at noon and 7 p.m. respectively. Maryland looks to avenge losses to both teams at last weekend's ECAC Championships.
