COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After dropping the series opener 5-3, the Maryland Terrapins rebounded with a 7-4 victory in the second game of a doubleheader Friday against Boston College at Shipley Field. Maryland (20-17, 6-11 ACC) won its 20th game of the season and snapped a six-game losing skid, as the Eagles (11-21-1, 5-12) fell prey to a four-run eighth inning to relinquish the lead.
Terps reliever Brett Cecil (4-3) picked up the victory in the nightcap, as he tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out three batters. For BC, Terry Doyle (2-3) took the loss after notching his third save of the season in the early game.
Senior shortstop Dan Melvin had an outstanding day at the plate, going 3-for-6 with four RBIs, including his solo home run in the second game which tied the game at four. Eagles catcher Tony Sanchez stood out for the BC offense, recording four hits on the day.
In the second game, Boston College opened a 3-0 lead early. Senior first baseman Jon Greenwich prevented further damage in the top of the third inning, as his leaping catch with the bases loaded ended the inning with no further runs crossing the plate. Maryland quickly responded by scoring three in the bottom half to tie the game.
BC retook the lead in the fifth inning when Eric Campbell's RBI base hit scored Sanchez, who doubled to lead off the inning. Eagles starter Nick Jeanes was able to hold the Terps bats at bay, as he pitched seven innings, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits while striking out 11.
Once Jeanes was lifted to begin the eighth, it was Doyle who was hit with an offensive explosion by the Terps. Melvin led off the inning with a deep home run to left field to tie the game at 4-4. The next four Maryland batters reached base, capped off by pinch hitter Will Greenberg's two-RBI single. Two batters later, outfielder Joe Palumbo punctuated the scoring with a run-scoring single.
Cecil, who entered in the eighth, prevented the Eagles from making a comeback, allowing a leadoff single but following it up with a strikeout and a double play to give the Terps the victory.
In the early game, Eagles starter Kevin Boggan (3-4) was nearly unhittable, allowing just two hits in eight innings pitched. Boggan, who outdueled Maryland starter Casey Baron (3-3), held the Terps hitless until the sixth inning, although a bases-loaded groundout by Mike Murphy plated the first Maryland run of the day.
The Terps mounted a late comeback, scoring twice on Melvin's double in the ninth inning to close the gap to two runs. However, Murphy, the potential tying run, was picked off at first base to end the game.
Maryland will try for the series win tomorrow when the two teams meet at 1 p.m. for the final game of the series. The contest can be viewed live on the ACC's regional sports network, with Comcast SportsNet providing coverage in the Washington/Baltimore area.
