COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland baseball team continues its seven-game road trip as the Terrapins visit rival West Virginia at 6 p.m. Tuesday. WMUC Sports will have the call live from Morgantown, as the Terps try to extend their non-conference win streak to three games in their final road contest of the 2007 regular season.
SERIES HISTORY
The Terps hold a 26-15-1 advantage (.631) over the Mountaineers. Last season, Maryland swept the home-and-home series, winning 10-8 in College Park and then 11-9 in Morgantown. WVU's last win came in 2004, a 6-3 decision at Shipley Field.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
Justin Jenkins currently leads the West Virginia offense, as the senior is batting .429 with 20 doubles, three triples and six home runs, all Mountaineer bests. He has driven in 39 runs batted in, also a team high. Brendan Bergerson has been the top reliever, as he has a 3-0 record and 2.25 ERA in 28 innings pitched, with two complete games.
WEEKEND RECAP
Maryland opened its road swing at conference foe Duke, and took the first game 5-4 in 11 innings. Dan Benick scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eleventh when he stole third base and advanced to home on a throwing error. Brett Cecil pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless ball to earn the win. Saturday and Sunday, the Blue Devils fought back and took the final two games, 11-1 and 4-2.
TURTLE POWER
Maryland has had no problems hitting the long ball thus far in 2007, as the Terps have blasted 27 home runs in 43 games. Sophomore Mike Murphy and senior Dan Melvin lead the team with five home runs. The Terps are 13-5 this season in games they have hit at least one round-tripper. In the second game of the year, Melvin blasted a 12th inning solo shot to give the Terps a 1-0 win over Gardner-Webb. In the Saturday win at NC State, senior Jon Greenwich pinch hit a blast to deep left field to put the Terps ahead, 3-2, in the top of the ninth. Against VCU, Spessard hit his first career grand slam as part of Maryland's 17-2 victory. In the loss at Towson, Melvin homered twice, including a three-run shot in the top of the seventh to break open the game. He hit the other one in the top of the 13th. Most recently, freshman AJ Casario hit a two-run homer in Friday night's 5-4 win at Duke.
