  • 2007 Schedule

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski has released the schedule for the 2007 Terrapins' men's soccer season. The slate includes 12 matches at Ludwig Field where the Terps went 13-2 last season. The schedule also features 12 teams that competed in last year's NCAA Tournament and two programs that advanced to the College Cup.

Maryland will continue to play one of the toughest schedules in the nation as its opponents had a combined record of 211-111-38 in 2006. Seven of the Terps' 18 opponents recorded 15 or more wins last season and all but three sported a winning record. Twelve of the teams that Maryland will face took part in last year's NCAA Tournament.

"Once again, I am excited to announce one of the toughest schedules in the nation," Cirovski said. "I know our players and our fans appreciate the challenge we take on as we test ourselves against the best teams in the nation."

Last season, the Terps set a school record in attendance with over 40,000 people. The 40,907 fans was the second highest total in the NCAA and the Terps' average attendance of 2,727 ranked third in the country. Highlighting the home season in 2006 was a record crowd of 6,489 to see Maryland beat Duke, 1-0, in front of a national television audience on Fox Soccer Channel. Two other games ranked in the top-five for attendance at Maryland in 2006 as 6,214 came out to watch Boston College for the first time ever in College Park which is the second largest crowd to watch a game at Ludwig. In addition, NC State drew 4,565 which ranks fifth on the single game attendance chart.

Fans can catch their first glimpse of the 2007 Terps with a pair of exhibition matchups at Ludwig in August. On the 18th, Maryland will take on Fairleigh Dickinson and then on the 24th it will host VCU.

The Terps will open the regular season on the road for a pair of matches in Bloomington beginning on August 31 when they take on an Indiana squad that advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament last season. Maryland will then face Notre Dame, the team that knocked the Terps out of last year's postseason, on September 2.

Cirovski and the Terps open its home schedule beginning on September 7 when they host BIG EAST counterpart West Virginia. Maryland and the Mountaineers have met just once before back in the 1971 NCAA Tournament. This will be the Mountaineers' first ever trip to College Park. Two days later, Maryland takes on local rival George Mason at Ludwig Field. Both of those squads advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year.

The Terrapins head to Boston College on September 15 to open its ACC portion of the schedule before returning to campus on September 19 to play regional rival Old Dominion which advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament last year.

Maryland will then head out for two important ACC road tests when it travels to Duke on September 22 and then Wake Forest on September 29. The Blue Devils won the ACC Championship last year and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament while the Demon Deacons participated in the College Cup.

On October 2, the Terps begin their nine-match homestand with their first-ever matchup with Stony Brook out of the America East Conference. Maryland will then square off against three-consecutive NCAA Tournament participants in Clemson (Oct. 5), Lehigh (Oct. 9), and Virginia Tech (Oct. 13). Villanova (Oct. 16), Cal St. Northridge (Oct. 21), and Georgetown (Oct. 23) then come to College Park to round out the non-conference portion of the schedule before the Terps end their homestand with NC State (Oct. 26) and College Cup participant Virginia (Nov. 3).

Maryland's contests against Lehigh and Cal St. Northridge will be the first in program history.

"This is truly a national schedule that exposes us to different styles and challenges," Cirovski said. "We are looking forward to testing ourselves in 2007."

The Terps conclude their regular season slate with a conference matchup against North Carolina in Chapel Hill on November 9.

The ACC Tournament will take place November 13-18 in Cary, N.C. at the SAS Soccer Stadium. The NCAA Tournament begins on November 23 with the College Cup beginning on December 14 in Cary.

Season tickets for the 2007 Maryland men's soccer season will go on sale this summer.
