PRINCETON, N.J.- The University of Maryland women's water polo team concluded the 2006-07 season today with a 10-9 loss to Brown in the third round of the CWPA Eastern Division Championship. Trailing the Bears 9-6 at the end of the third quarter, the Terrapins launched a fourth-quarter comeback effort but were unable to capitalize on a steal in the final ten seconds of the game to tie up the score.
"We made some key mistakes defensively at the beginning of the game that we were unable to overcome," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer. "However, I was proud of the girls for making a good, strong effort for a comeback. We had a chance to tie the game with only a few seconds left."
Leading the Terps' offense were Rachel Jordan, Elizabeth Hopkins, Blaise Stanicic, and Shannon Simerly with two goals apiece. Senior Orsi Ferenczy also scored one for the Terps in her final collegiate game.
Ferenczy's classmate, senior goalie Marissa Corwin, blocked seven while allowing nine goals scored in the first three quarters of play. Ashleigh Jobson took over between the pipes in the fourth, blocking two and holding Brown to only one goal to anchor the Terps' comeback effort.
Maryland completes the season with an overall record of 16-18, and achieved sixth place in the CWPA Eastern Division Championship.
