COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland Director of Athletics Deborah A. Yow was the keynote speaker at an event on Tuesday night in Comcast Center's Heritage Hall, which covered the topic of women in the field of athletics and the opportunities available to them. The event was co-sponsored by Kappa Alpha Theta and the Dance Team.
The event was organized by university students Shannon Hofher of Kappa Alpha Theta and the Dance Team's Vanessa Walters. Yow opened the evening addressing the students and then took questions. The students broke up into groups and participated in round tables with female members of the athletic department. The featured areas discussed were academic support & career development, compliance, development/fundraising, media relations and sports marketing. The female employees who covered their area of specialty were Associate Athletic Director Cheryl Harrison from development; Carrie Blankenship and Kirsten Olson, Assistant Directors of Sports Marketing; Assistant Media Relations Director Natalia Ciccone; Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance Keli Cunningham; and Assistant Director Laura Meckley, who works in the department's Academic Support & Career Development.
