Four Terps Earn USILA All-America Honors

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Seniors Ray Megill and Steve Whittenberg led four Terps who were named to USILA All-America teams, which were announced this weekend during the Final Four in Baltimore.

Defenders Megill and Whittenberg were each named to the second team, while sophomore Dan Groot was a third team honoree. Senior attackman Michael Phipps was an honorable mention selection.

Megill, a native of Clark, N.J., is now a three-time All-American and made the second team after being a third team selection last season. This season the athletic defender was among the team leaders with 27 groundballs and 20 caused turnovers. He also proved to be an offensive threat in transition and finished with three goals and two assists.

Whittenberg, a native of Springfield, Va., is also a three-time All-American and makes his second straight appearance on the second team. Regarded as one of the top on-ball defenders in the country he led the Terps with 32 caused turnovers in 2007 and also finished the season with 32 groundballs.

Groot, a native of Canandaigua, N.Y., earned his first All-America selection as a sophomore. He finsihed third on the team in goals and points with 21 and 32, respectively. Of his 21 goals, an amzing eight came on the Terps' man-up unit and Groot also tallied three game-winning goals, including the overtime winner at Navy on April 6.

Phipps, a native of Annapolis, Md., was selected after having his best season for the Terrapins as a senior. He led the team in points and goals with 50 and 28, respectively. He finished the year with a phenomenal .394 shooting percentage and picked up 37 groundballs, while averaging less than one turnover per game.
