COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The Maryland football team began its summer testing Monday with a power clean weight lifting session in the Gossett Team House. Several players posted impressive numbers, including tight end Tommy Galt and defensive tackle Dre Moore, who set all-time team records for their positions.
Galt, the son of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Dwight Galt, posted a clean of 385, which bested the previous record held by former first team All-American Vernon Davis, who had owned all six testing records for the position. In spring 2007 testing Galt posted a clean of 370.
Tommy's father gave him a congratulatory hug after he threw down the weight, among a round of applause. "He broke Vernon's record," the elder Galt said. "We thought that those six were untouchable."
Moore took back his place at the top of the all-time list for defense lineman, with a clean of 385. Moore had originally earned the top spot when he lifted 365 last year, but Dean Muhtadi bested that with a clean of 370 in spring 2007 testing. Muhtadi improved to 375 in Monday's round of testing.
A trio of defensive backs also showed impressive strength, as Nolan Carroll, J.J. Justice, and Drew Robinson all lifted 335. Tight end Dan Gronkowksi, a junior, greatly improved his clean from 340 in the spring to 375, an increase of 35 pounds.
First-year wide receiver Torrey Smith posted a clean of 300, an impressive number for an incoming freshman.
The players will continue summer testing Tuesday with the bench press, pro agility drill, and vertical leap.
