2007-08 Schedule
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team has released its 2007-08 schedule which features seven home duals and is capped off by the 2008 ACC Championships that will be held at Comcast Center on March 8. The Terrapins will open their home slate on Sunday, December 2 against Lehigh. Maryland will face seven teams that finished the season in the final USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll last season.
Maryland will open the season with a tough road stretch beginning on November 3 at the Avalon Duals where it will square off against Army, Mercyhurst, and Edinboro which was ranked No. 12 in the last USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll and finished ninth at the NCAA Championships.
The Terps travel to No. 11 Penn State on November 11 for a dual against the Nittany Lions, which finished 11th at NCAAs. The following two weeks will not get any easier as Maryland competes in the Body Bar Systems Invitational at Cornell on November 17 and then the Northeast Duals in Guilderland, N.Y. a week later. The Terps will wrestle No. 15 Michigan and No. 10 Central Michigan at that event along with Appalachian State. The Wolverines took sixth at the NCAA Championships last season.
Maryland opens its home schedule against No. 22 Lehigh on December 2 and then hosts a pair of duals against Rider and Rutgers on the 8th.
Once again, the Terps will compete in the prestigious Southern Scuffle on December 29-30. Maryland finished eighth last year at the tournament as Alex Krom took second at 141 pounds, Mike Letts finished third at 174 pounds, and Hudson Taylor placed fourth at 197. Last year, three wrestlers that competed in the tournament went on to win individual NCAA titles along with other wrestlers earning All-America status. Eight nationally ranked teams took part in the Scuffle last season with 62 individuals being ranked in the top 20 in their respective weight classes.
Maryland takes on No. 21 Navy, which placed 18th at nationals, on January 10 before opening the ACC schedule at North Carolina on January 13. The Terps then host Virginia Tech on the 19th and NC State and Duke on the 26th. Maryland also faces No. 18 Penn in Philadelphia and American, which finished 17th at NCAAs, at Comcast on February 8 to gear up for the ACC Championships.
Maryland closes out the regular season with George Mason in Fairfax on February 23 before closing out its ACC slate at Virginia the following day.
The 2008 ACC Championships will be held at Comcast Center for the first time in history on March 8. The last time the Terps hosted the tournament was at Cole Field House in 2000. Maryland finished second at the championships this past season which was the best showing since 1990. During the regular season, the Terps finished 5-0 in the ACC and clinched its first outright conference dual meet championship since 1974.
The NCAA Championships will be held in St. Louis on March 20-22. Jason Kiessling, Mike Letts, and Hudson Taylor each represented Maryland in the championships in 2007 with Taylor coming up one match short of All-America status.
