MONTREAL - Former Maryland men's soccer standout Robbie Rogers recorded two assists as the United States U-20 National Team easily beat Poland, 6-1, in its second match in Group D of the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Montreal. Keeper Chris Seitz earned the win in goal.
The win gives the United States four points in the group as it tied Korea Republic on June 30, 1-1. The US will look to win its group for the third straight time when it faces Brazil on Friday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m. The match can be watched live on ESPNU.
The US dominated Poland in all aspects of the match as it had large advantages in shots (17-6), shots on goal (11-1), and corner kicks (6-1).
Poland jumped on the board first, however, in the fifth minute when Patryk Malecki freed up Dawid Janczyk on the right side. Janczyk went one-on-one with Seitz and slipped a shot under the Real Salt Lake keeper for the first goal of the match.
The United States responded quickly when Danny Szetela headed home a Tony Beltran cross from 15 yards out. The shot hit the underside of the crossbar and slipped in for the equalizer.
The US dominated the course of play the rest of the way and scored five more unanswered goals for the win. Sal Zizzo and Freddy Adu hooked up for two more goals before the end of the first half to take a commanding 3-1 lead into the locker room.
The US scored three more times in the second frame with Rogers assisting on the final two. Rogers set up Josmer Altidore in the 70th minute and Adu used one of his passes to net a hat trick in the 86th minute of play.
