COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Stephen King scored twice in two minutes as the No. 9 Maryland men's soccer beat Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0, on Saturday night in the Terrapins' preseason lid lifter. Sophomore Drew Yates added the other goal for the Terps while the defense allowed just three shots. The match was played in the format of three 35 minute periods.
Junior Graham Zusi assisted on the first two goals of the match while sophomore Jeremy Hall and freshman Rodney Wallace dished out helpers as well.
"It was a very good opening performance by the team," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We came out really sharp defensively and got out of here with a lot of good performances. It was very pleasing."
For the first 35 minutes, the Terps held possession in their offensive half of the field for a bulk of the time. Zusi fired the first shot on goal in the match at the 19:03 mark and then Wallace and senior Spencer Allen set up Zusi again but both attempts were saved by the Knights' keeper.
Maryland's offensive pressure finally pulled through in the 19th minute when Zusi found himself wide open in front of the keeper. His shot was saved, but the rebound trickled to the right side where Yates was waiting. He fired a shot into the back of the net for the first goal of the game.
The Terps started the second frame off with a bang and put the game away for good. Sophomore Omar Gonzalez found a streaking Zusi on the left side and dealt a nice through ball his way. Zusi took possession down the field with Hall trailing behind him. With a man in front of him, Zusi tapped the ball back to Hall, who passed to King in the box for the score.
Just over two minutes later, King scored again inside the box when Wallace found him from the left side.
The Maryland defense held strong the entire match and allowed three shots throughout the 105 minutes with just one being on target.
Maryland almost came up with a fourth goal late in the game when Wallace fired a shot from the left side with just over three minutes to go, but a good save prevented the score. Over a minute later, Hall was stifled on a header that was set up by junior Michael Marchiano.
The Terps are back in action on Wednesday, August 22 when they take on the University of Montreal in an international exhibition. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. at the Varsity Practice Field.
