COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In the Maryland women's basketball team's 88-61 win at Boston College on Thursday night, senior Crystal Langhorne broke the overall school rebounding record (men's or women's) previously held by Terrapin men's legend Len Elmore. Elmore and Langhorne hold the distinction of being the only Maryland basketball players to eclipse the 1,000 rebound mark.
"I want to express my sincere congratulations to Crystal for the milestone that she accomplished last night. As a Terp varsity player from 1971-1974, no one knows better than I how committed and dedicated one must be to be a superior rebounder and how important that skill is to the total team effort," said Elmore, who held the Maryland record for 34 years, grabbing 1,053 in his career. More importantly, I commend Crystal for the way she has conducted herself and represented her University during her brilliant four-year career. She is one reason why I continue to boast `I'm proud to be a Terp.'"
"I know how highly-regarded Len Elmore is in the Maryland basketball community," said senior Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro). "To be mentioned in the same sentence as such a great basketball player is an honor. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to play at Maryland with such great teammates and coaches, with which I can share this special accomplishment."
The only two-time All-American in the history of the women's basketball program, Langhorne broke the all-time women's record on Dec. 3, 2007 at Rutgers, surpassing Vicky Bullett's (1986-89) mark of 968. She became the first-ever Terrapin women's basketball player to grab 1,000 rebounds in Maryland's win at James Madison on Dec. 20, 2007 and also became only the 15th woman in the history of the ACC to do so. She grabbed 18 boards in the rout over BC to surpass Elmore's mark and now has 1,064 heading into Monday's game against No. 12 Duke.
Langhorne, also a 2007 Academic All-American and three-time All-ACC performer, can be found all over the Terrapin record book and garnered numerous honors during her career in College Park. She needs only 20 points to tie Bullett's scoring record of 1,928 points.
Elmore was a 1974 All-American and a three-time all-conference selection under Coach Lefty Driesell. A 1,000-point scorer as well, he also still holds the school record for career rebounding average (12.2) and single-season average (14.7 in 1974). He is the only player at Maryland, men's or women's, to grab over 400 rebounds in a season (412, 1974).
The fourth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team returns to action on Monday, Jan. 14 for the highly-anticipated matchup against No. 12 Duke. Tickets are still available but going fast, with over 11,000 tickets sold. To purchase tickets, visit www.umterps.com or call 1-800-IM-A-TERP.
