BALTIMORE, Md. - Maryland standout Stephen King was selected by the Chicago Fire with the 40th overall pick in the third round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft on January 18. King is the 22nd Terrapin to be taken in the draft since its inception in 1996.

King finished his career second all-time in assists at Maryland with 33 while his 93 career points ranks sixth. He also scored 30 goals which is one away from the top 10. His three-assist performance against No. 14 Virginia on November 3, 2007 tied the program record for assists in a game. He racked up 13 assists in 2007 which is the second most in school history in a single season.

King, a native of Medford, N.J., was a work horse for the Terrapins since his arrival in College Park in 2004, earning a start in every contest Maryland played in his four seasons. He started 93 games in his career which is a Terps record. King helped the Terps to two NCAA Sweet Sixteens, the 2004 College Cup, and the 2005 National Championship.

King was also a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy for the second-straight year as a senior, a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, a first team All-American by College Soccer News, and a first-team All-ACC honoree. King has been equally impressive in the classroom as he was a two-time Academic All-American.

King was recently called to the U-23 National Team training camp by head coach Peter Nowak. The United States team is preparing in Bradenton, Fla. for the 2008 CONCACAF U-23 Championship in March.
