Terps Return Home to Host Georgia Tech
With its win over archrival Virginia, the fourth-ranked Terrapins extended its win streak to a season-high 11 games heading into their Sunday, Jan. 20 matchup vs. Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets were one of only three teams last year to defeat Maryland.
Senior Crystal Langhorne became Maryland's all-time scoring leader in the win at Virginia, breaking the women's record held by former Terrapin great Vicky Bullett (1986-89). Langhorne now claims the program's scoring and rebounding marks.
Maryland is 5-0 in ACC play for the first time since 1992.
Sunday's game vs. the Yellow Jackets can be heard across the state on the Maryland Radio Network and on the internet on www.umterps.com with the Terps' Matt Noble and Dave Preston calling the action. About the Yellow Jackets
Georgia Tech is 16-2 entering Sunday's game, winning its last three games. The Yellow Jackets had won eight in a row until facing North Carolina on Jan. 5, falling by a 99-78 decision. They are also 3-1 in ACC play, most recently pulling out a 67-63 nail biter over NC State in Raleigh, N.C.
Georgia Tech is led by Janie Mitchell, who is everaging 16.9 ppg. She is one of three players averaging double figures. GT has seven players on the team with at least 20 steals. As a team, it averages 14.0 steals per game, the third-most in the country.
MaChelle Joseph has been at the helm in Atlanta for five seasons. Last season, she led the Yellow Jackets to the program's second NCAA Tournament appearance and first in over a decade.
SERIES HISTORY vs. GT: The Terrapins lead the all-time series, 40-16, dating back to 1979. They had won four in a row against the Yellow Jackets from 2005-06, before being upset by GT in Atlanta. But Maryland avenged the loss in the ACC Tournament to advance to the semifinal round.
Langhorne Breaks All-Time scoring Record
Two-time All-American Crystal Langhorne has certainly broken numerous records and reached a number of milestones in her career. Her latest feat was breaking the most important record, claiming the program's all-time scoring mark.
With her third basket in the win at Virginia, Langhorne became Maryland's all-time scoring leader, breaking Vicky Bullett's mark of 1,928 set from 1986-89.
Langhorne has already claimed Maryland's all-time rebounding men's and women's record.
Langhorne is one of only two Terrapins all-time to score at lest 1,900 points. She also ranks among the all-time ACC scoring leaders, ranking in the top 20. She has scored 1,944 points in her career.
Langhorne is Right On
All-American Crystal Langhorne has led the nation in field goal shooting the last two seasons, only the third player in NCAA history to lead the nation in that category in back-to-back seasons.
Langhorne is having another oustanding shooting season. She has made 63.8 percent of her shots from the floor, which would rank fourth in the nation (behind of teammate Laura Harper, who currently ranks third in the category). However, because Langhorne sat out six games at the beginning of the season, she does not meet the minimums to qualify for the NCAA statistical rankings.
Langhorne boasts a 65.2 percent career shooting percentage, which is an ACC record and ranks among the top five percentages in NCAA history.
Everyone is Chipping In
Once again, Maryland is getting all the players involved when it comes to offense. With four players averaging double figures, the scoring is coming from all positions on the court.
While five different players have led the team in scoring, to date, the Terps have had at least four players score in double figures in 13 games. At least three have reached double figures in every game.
In the blowout win over Loyola, six Terps scored in double figures that evening. All five scorers reached double digits in the win over UMBC.
