MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -
Freshman Jessica Hollandsworth picked up an individual victory in only her third collegiate event, leading the University of Maryland to the team victory Tuesday at the Spider Fall Invitational women's golf event hosted by the University of Richmond.
Hollandsworth, from Floyd, Va., finished at 1-under-par 143 over the 36-hole event to win by one stroke over Mary Carmody of Longwood. Stevy Loy of Columbia was third at 145 after opening with a 70 in Monday's first round and ending the day tied with Alex Rankin of Wofford.
Hollandsworth had rounds of 72 and 71 to pick up the win at the Independence Golf Club.
Maryland placed three golfers in the top 10 to earn the victory, with Hilary Lawson placing fifth at 148 after a 70 on Tuesday and Lauren Varnas tying for 10th at 151. Lara Peffley had a 78 on Tuesday to tie for 31st at 158, with Kerri Connolly posting a 162 total to tie for 42nd.
Maryland, which started the day 10 shots behind first-round leader Wofford, shot 295 on Tuesday to finish at 600. Wofford ended up in second place, three strokes behind the Terrapins, with Longwood in third at 605.
Maryland plays next at the Lady Pirate Invitational at Greenville, N.C., on Oct. 19-21.
