GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Maryland men's soccer freshman forward Casey Townsend has been named ACC Co-Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Townsend was also tabbed national player of the week by College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.com.
Townsend, who has more goals this season than any other freshman in the nation, scored three times last week to help spark the sixth-ranked Terps to a pair of victories. Against Lehigh last Tuesday night, the forward from Traverse City, Michigan netted the game-winner in overtime to give Maryland a win, 2-1, at Ludwig Field. The freshman followed up with a pair of goals in a 4-0 rout against Evansville on Friday night. Townsend leads the Terps with 22 points (10g, 2a) and ranks first in the ACC in game-winning scores with four. With the two wins, Maryland eclipsed its win total from a year ago with 11 in 2008 and extended its winning-streak to four.
It is the second week in a row that Maryland men's soccer boasts the ACC Player of the Week as Jeremy Hall earned the distinction last Tuesday. The last time the Terps picked up a national player of the week nod was November 5, 2007, when Stephen King garnered the honor.
Maryland (11-3-0) heads to Morgantown, W.Va. for a match against West Virginia at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night.
