Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshmen Maddi Lee and Lisa Scott combined for 14 kills and seven blocks, but the University of Maryland volleyball team was defeated in three sets by ACC leader Virginia Tech, 3-0, at Comcast Pavilion Friday evening.

The Hokies defeated the Terps by scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-23 to move to 13-2 and 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terps dropped their third straight match to fall to 5-11 and 1-3 in the conference.

Both sides exchanged three-point runs to begin the first set and played to a 5-5 tie. The Hokies responded with another three-point surge, however, and the Terps never led again. The score was close at 9-8 Virginia Tech but a five-point run put the Hokies up six and they never trailed by less than three the rest of the way.

At 15-9 Virginia Tech, the Terps scored three consecutive points, two on Katie Usher kills, to force a Virginia Tech timeout, but the Hokies sealed the set with a 10-7 run.

Maryland led 4-2 in the second set, but then dropped three straight points and never led again. The Terps kept the margin within one up to the point where the Hokies led 10-9. The Hokies then went on a 10-6 run to take a 19-5 lead late in the set. Maryland got to within three at 21-18, but the Hokies took the set with a 4-1 run.

Despite trailing by four or more points on several occasions, Maryland hung tough in the third set and did not let Virginia Tech run away and hide.

The Terps fell behind by seven at 14-7 midway through the set. However, Maryland responded with a 7-2 run to tighten the score at 16-14 Hokies. The Terps got within one point four more times in the set, but could not claim the crucial tying point.

Maryland had two late chances to tie the score at 23 and 24 apiece, but Virginia Tech took both points on a Maryland service error and a match-clinching victory from middle blocker Felicia Willoughby.

Virginia Tech out-hit Maryland .198 to .104. Lee led the Terps with seven kills on .357 hitting to go with three blocks. Scott also had seven kills and four blocks.

Willoughby led the Hokies with 10 kills on .421 hitting and four blocks.

The Terps host the Virginia Cavaliers at 7 p.m. Saturday. The match will be broadcast live on the Internet via ACC Select.
