Postgame Notes
Mighty Moise: LB Moise Fokou burst through the line of scrimmage to sack Virginia QB Marc Verica for a loss of 10 on third-and-nine during the second quarter. The play, Fokou's team-leading and career-high third sack of the season, forced Virginia to punt. Fokou finished Saturday's game with seven tackles (all solo), two of which were for loss.
State of Denial: DB Kevin Barnes came off the edge to block Virginia PK Yannick Reyering's 38-yard field goal attempt during the fourth quarter. It marked the first blocked field goal of Barnes' career, and the first by a Terp since LB Alex Wujciak blocked one in the season-opening victory over Delaware (8/30). Maryland now two blocked field goals in a season for the first time since William Kershaw blocked two in 2004.
Tackle Machine: Fresh off a career-best 16-tackle performance in the win over Clemson, LB Alex Wujciak led the Terps in that category yet again versus Virginia. The sophomore, who ranked fourth in the ACC in tackles (8.6 pg) entering Saturday's game, tallied a game-high nine stops against the Cavaliers.
Ronnie on a Roll: WR Ronnie Tyler set career highs on Saturday with five receptions for 56 yards, both of which were team highs. The redshirt freshman wideout now has nine catches for 87 yards in Maryland's two conference games thus far this season.
All-Purpose Player: WR Torrey Smith notched a career-best 144 kickoff return yards against Virginia. With two receptions for 26 yards, Smith finished with a game-high 170 all-purpose yards. He has now averaged 151 all-purpose yards during Maryland's last three games.
Terp Trickery: Maryland offense coordinator James Franklin continued his creative play-calling against the Cavaliers. On the final play of the first half, QB Chris Turner connected with WR Isaiah Williams for a 12-yard gain. Williams proceeded to shovel the ball to a streaking Darrius Heyward-Bey, who tossed a lateral pass to RB Da'Rel Scott. The play totaled 45 yards, making it the Terps' second-longest pass play of the season. It marked the second time this season three non-quarterback players have touched the ball on a single play for Maryland. The other such play, which also included Heyward-Bey and Williams, went for 43 yards and a touchdown against Eastern Michigan.
Chart-Climber: With 20 completions for a season-high 223 yards, QB Chris Turner continued his ascent through Maryland's passing records. Saturday's performance enabled the junior signal-caller to pass Calvin McCall (1999-2000) for 14th place on Maryland's all-time list for passing yards with 2,939. He now ranks 13th in school history in career pass completions with 236, having pass Al Neville (1971-73) and Bob Avellini (1972-74). Turner has now thrown for at least 200 yards in nine of the last 11 games in which he has started.
Breaking Up is Easy To Do: DBs Kevin Barnes and Anthony Wiseman each registered two PBUs against the Cavaliers. Barnes, who entered Saturday's game ranked tied for fifth in the ACC in passes defended, now has five PBUs on the season.
Streaks continue: Several Terps extended streaks on Saturday. DL Jeremy Navarre has now played in 43 consecutive games, and his 41 career starts are the most on the team. OL Edwin Williams has now started 32 consecutive games, tops on the offense.
Series record: Maryland dropped to 41-30-2 all-time versus Virginia, who represents the Terps' most-played opponent in school history. Maryland still owns a 21-18 series advantage in games played in Charlottesville.
