Maryland Men's Lacrosse Releases 2009 Schedule

Nov. 17, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland men's lacrosse coach Dave Cottle has released the Terps' 2009 schedule. The schedule features six games against 2008 NCAA tournament teams and has Maryland taking part in two major events at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium.

The Terps are coming off last year's 10-6 campaign that saw them reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament for the 28th time. Maryland will return seven starters, including all three sophomore attackmen and its tandem goalie duo of Brian Phipps and Jason Carter.

"We're excited about the challenges that this schedule presents to us," said Cottle. "We have high expectations for this season and this schedule will help us prepare for where we want to be at the end of the season."

Following two weekends of preseason scrimmages with Loyola, Delaware and Princeton, the 2009 schedule kicks off with a pair of neutral-site games in Jacksonville, Fla. Maryland opens the season on Feb. 13, the earliest opening game in the Terps' 84-year history, against Presbryterian. The Terrapins will then take part in the Wounded Warrior Project, which assists men and women injured in the line of duty serving in the U.S. military, with a game against Air Force on Feb. 14.

The following weekend finds Maryland returning to College Park for its home opener against D.C.-area rival Georgetown on Feb. 21.

The Terps will then take part in the third annual Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on Feb. 28. The Maryland-Duke game will be the second game in the Face-Off Classic doubleheader, with Johns Hopkins and Princeton meeting in the opener.

The team plays at Towson on March 7, before hosting UMBC on March 14. The Terps then return to College Park the following day for their first-ever meeting with Bryant on March 15.

The Terps conclude their ACC schedule with back-to-back games with North Carolina and Virginia the last two weeks of March. Maryland hosts the Tar Heels on March 21, before heading to Charlottesville, Va., to face the Cavaliers on March 28.

Maryland plays at Navy on April 3 in a primetime Friday night game on April 3 before returning to M&T Bank Stadium on April 11 to face arch-rival Johns Hopkins in the inaugural Inside Lacrosse Day of Rivals event. The Blue Jays-Terrapins game will cap the doubleheader will feature the annual Army-Navy game in the opener.

Maryland then hosts Binghamton on "Senior Day" on April 14. The Terps play at Penn on April 18 before traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the 2009 ACC Tournament, which will be held at North Carolina's Fetzer Field on April 24 and 26.

The final tune-up before the NCAA Tournament comes on May 2 at Yale. The NCAA Tournament will begin on the weekend on May 9-10 and conclude with the National Championship game on Memorial Day, May 25, in Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
