Terps Women's Basketball Prepare for Visit from James Madison

Nov. 20, 2008

Game Notes

With their first victory out of the way, the Maryland women's basketball team will look to build on that success Thursday night when the James Madison Dukes visit Comcast Center at 7:00 p.m.

Maryland (1-1) opened its home schedule Sunday afternoon by defeated Delaware State, 73-46. The Terps were led by junior Demauria Liles, who recorded her first collegiate double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Liles' double-double came on the heels of Lynetta Kizer's 12-point, 15-rebound performance against TCU in the season opener.

The Terps and James Madison (1-0) are renewing an old rivalry which saw Maryland claim a 5-1 series lead in games played throughout the 1970s. The series was put on the shelf until last season, when Maryland traveled to Harrisonburg and emerged with a 71-65 victory. In that contest, the Terps were powered down the stretch by Laura Harper and then-junior Marissa Coleman, who scored 19 points including several clutch free throws late.

Maryland's victory over James Madison last season ended the Dukes' 30-game home winning streak, at the time the longest home streak in the country. Now, the tables are turned as it is Maryland which comes into today's contest riding a 22-game home winning streak.

Terps fans could see history at the Comcast Center in tonight's game. Coleman, who is leading the team thus far this season with 14.0 points per game, needs just 20 more to reach 1,600 in her career. She would become the seventh Terp in program history to reach that milestone. Coleman, who has yet to reach 20 points in a game in the first two contests this year, has 20 career games with at least that many points, including ten last year.

A win today would also bring head coach Brenda Frese within three victories of her 150th at the University of Maryland. She has 203 triumphs overall in her head coaching career.
