COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The fifth-ranked Maryland men's soccer team will look to stretch its winning streak to eight on Friday night when it plays host to No. 20 North Carolina on Senior Night at Ludwig Field.
The Terps are coming off a huge win on the road at Virginia, 2-1, last Friday that secured an important second seed for Maryland in the ACC Tournament, which kicks off next week in Cary, N.C. Jeremy Hall scored his ninth goal in eight games while Graham Zusi nailed the clincher off a penalty kick in the second half to give Maryland its fifth ACC victory in 2008. Hall now leads the Terps and ranks fourth in the ACC in goals with 11. Freshman Zac MacMath won his tenth consecutive contest between the pipes as the Maryland defense continues to roll. The Terrapin backline has surrendered only four goals since losing at Clemson Oct. 3.
North Carolina has dropped three straight since going 11-2-1 to begin the year. The Tar Heels are the latest victims of top-ranked Wake Forest, falling to the Demon Deacons last Saturday, 4-2, in Chapel Hill. UNC is led by Brian Shriver, who paces the Tar Heels and the ACC in goals with 13 in 2008. Seven players have scored at least two goals for North Carolina this season.
Maryland leads the all-time series, 39-21-3, including a 3-1-1 slate in the last five meetings. Zusi netted the game-winner with six seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift the Terps past UNC, 2-1, last season.
Friday is also Senior Night for five Maryland players - Zusi, Aaron Chinn, Rich Costanzo, A.J. Delagarza, and Michael Marchiano. The class includes the last remaining players from the 2005 National Championship squad and boasts a 59-18-8 overall record since their arrival to College Park. The Terps have not lost a Senior Night contest since 2000.
First kick is slated for 8 p.m. at Ludwig Field and is also available on the internet via ACC Select. Tickets for adults are $8 and $5 for seniors and youth. Students gain free admission by presenting a valid student ID. ="">
