Maryland Water Polo Closes With Two Wins at Triton Invitational

Feb. 10, 2008

SAN DIEGO - A day after losing a pair to nationally-ranked foes, the University of Maryland women's water polo team evened its record on the season with two wins Sunday on the final day of action at the Triton Invitational.

The Terps, who received votes in last week's national poll, defeated the University of Redlands, 15-4, and then edged Brown University, 10-8.

Maryland lost to No. 6 San Diego State, 13-6, and to No. 19 Santa Clara, 8-5, in Saturday's action of the 16-team tournament.

In Sunday's opener vs. Redlands, the Terps (2-2) were led by sophomore Shannon Simerly, who grabbed four steals to go along with four goals.

"We played really good defense and negated anything they wanted to do offensively, turning that into a lot of fast-break goals for us," Coach Carl Salyer said after the Redlands game.

Maryland jumped out to an early lead when junior Elizabeth Hopkins scored the first of her four goals just 15 seconds into the match, and it never looked back.

Junior Rachel Jordan chimed in with three goals of her own, helping the Terrapins to a 10-0 lead at halftime.

On the other end, goalie Ashleigh Jobson blocked five balls and allowed none past her in one half of play.

The Terps took an early lead in the Brown match and held on for the hard-fought win. They led 5-2 at halftime and 8-5 after three quarters.

Simerly led the scoring attack with three goals. Bryndis Klein and Maggie Eicks added two goals apiece.

Jobson went the whole way in net and had eight blocks.

The Terps are off to the Princeton Invitational next weekend. Maryland will face Siena, Villanova and Indiana in Saturday's action and Harvard on Sunday.
