COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland women's water polo team finished strong Sunday by defeating St. Francis College, 15-8, and Wagner, 20-12, to post a 5-0 record at the Terrapin Invitational at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium.
The Terps (10-3) were led by Shannon Simerly and Rachel Jordan, who each had six goals on the day. Jordan's six all came in the match against Wagner College (1-5), a game in which Maryland scored a season-high 20 goals.
Freshman Maggie Eicks continued to impress with three goals against Wagner. Elizabeth Hopkins also scored three against the Seahawks, and Blaise Stanicic notched four goals against St. Francis (1-2).
Despite allowing 12 goals against Wagner, the Terrapins had control of the game from the start, scoring five of the first six goals before jumping to a 10-3 lead at halftime.
The Terps' win over St. Francis was not as easily determined, as the Terriers stayed with Maryland in only their third game of the season. Two goals from senior captain Allie Houseal, along with two of Bryndis Klein's four goals on the day helped propel the Terps to their 10th victory of the season.
Maryland was only scheduled to play one game Sunday, but took on an extra game against St. Francis, along with an extra game Saturday night against Villanova, when Slippery Rock University did not attend.
With five wins over the weekend Maryland has matched its best start in team history (2006), winning 10 of the first 13 games. The Terps have won their last six outings, and 10 of their last 11 games.
The Terps will have their hands full next weekend when they play host to the Elite Six Tournament. Maryland will face No. 15 Michigan (6-9), No. 20 Indiana (5-7), No. 13 Hartwick (4-5) and Brown (1-3). The Terrapins have already seen two of those teams this season, falling to Indiana, 12-6, and topping Brown, 10-8.
After tough losses in two of the best matches Saturday, the Red Foxes of Marist (4-4) got a well-earned 9-5 victory Sunday over George Washington. Marist lost its two games Saturday by a combined three goals.
In the first match of the day, No. 19 Bucknell (10-2) topped Iona, 10-4. The Bison finished the weekend without a loss, as did Maryland and No. 18 Princeton (5-2). George Washington (3-6) won its other game of the day, a 14-3 victory over Villanova.
Despite being two months away, the CWPA Southern Division Championship is already shaping up to be very exciting.
