GREENSBORO, N.C. (from the ACC) -
Maryland's Grant Catalino and North Carolina's Grant Zimmermann were named this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Co-Players of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, February 24. Catalino led the Terrapins to a 11-6 upset over No. 4 Georgetown last week, while Zimmermann was instrumental in the Tar Heels 6-5 win over No. 16 Denver.
Catalino had one of the most memorable debuts in the 83-year history of Maryland men's lacrosse, scoring four times, including the game's first goal to give the Terps some much-needed momentum and confidence against a fourth-ranked Georgetown squad. The freshman from Webster, N.Y., led all scorers with his four goals, including tallying Maryland's lone man-up goal, against one of the top rated defenses in college lacrosse. With Catalino leading the Terp rookies, Maryland had four freshmen total nine of its 11 goals. Catalino also chipped in with a pair of tough groundballs, the first of which directly led to the first score of the game.
Behind Zimmerman's outstanding play in the goal, UNC overcame Denver's home field advantage, leading the Tar Heels to a 6-5 win over the Pioneers, avenging a loss to Denver two years ago on the same field. Zimmerman made 10 saves and allowed only five goals in 60 minutes of play, while also sharing the team lead in ground balls with four. In 105 minutes of play in the season's opening two games, Zimmerman has allowed only seven goals, an average of 3.94 per game while compiling a .696 save percentage.
Maryland men's lacrosse travels to Mount St. Mary's for a 3 p.m. ET contest Tuesday, Feb. 26, while North Carolina remains at home this Sunday, hosting Cornell. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
