COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
On Friday, Feb. 8, former Terrapin Shay Doron returns to College Park to have her number 22 honored in a ceremony at halftime of the Maryland women's basketball team's game vs. Virginia on Friday, Feb. 8. Head coach Brenda Frese's first recruit when she arrived at Maryland, Doron wore the number in her four seasons from 2004-07.
During her career at Maryland, Shay Doron (Ramat Hasharon, Israel/Christ the King [N.Y.]) helped the Terrapins win 102 games, including the program's first national championship. She was part of the only class to make four-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament, advancing to at least the second round every season.
A four-year starter, Doron ended her career ranked second in the history of the program in scoring and currently ranks third, netting 1,878 points, one of only three players in the history of Maryland women's basketball to have scored at least 1,800 points. The second-fastest player to 1,000 points, she was the 21st player in school history to reach the milestone, doing so in 64 games. She also holds the record for career free throws made (492) and games played (134), and is fourth with an 80.3 career free throw shooting percentage.
Doron holds numerous other records. In her first-collegiate appearance, she tied the NCAA record for most free throws made in a game, sinking 23 shots from the charity stripe. She scored 39 points in a game as a sophomore, tying the school's single-game record. She also holds class records for the most free throws made by a freshman (136) and junior (135), and best scoring average among all-time sophomores (17.6 ppg) at Maryland. She is one of only two players in school history to have two 500-point seasons.
A three-time All-ACC honoree, Doron was the first-ever Maryland women's basketball player to earn all-conference honors as a rookie in 2003-04, garnering third team nods. She was the Terps' first first-team pick since 1994, also earning Kodak/WBCA Honorable Mention All-American honors that season. An Honorable Mention All-American as a senior by the Associated Press, Doron was twice selected a preseason candidate for the WBCA Wade Trophy and John R. Wooden Award, and was a preseason candidate for the Naismith Award in 2007.
A criminal justice major who graduated in May of 2007, Doron was a two-time ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-American, a three-time academic all-district selection and twice was named to the Academic All-ACC team. She was inducted to the Greater Washington Jewish Community Center Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 and was awarded the 2006 National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete. A second-round draft pick, she spent last summer playing with the WNBA's New York Liberty and currently is a member of Team Ramla in her native Israel.
Doron's jersey will be the fourth honored in Maryland women's basketball history. No. 4 Jasmina Perazic (1980-83), No. 23 Vicky Bullett (1986-89) and No. 44 Tara Heiss (1975-78) have their jersey numbers hanging in the rafters at Comcast Center.
At the conclusion of the game, Doron will participate in an autograph session. Tickets for the game are still available through the Comcast Center Ticket Office, by visiting www.umterps.com or by calling 1-800-IM-A-TERP.
