Maryland Water Polo Drops a Pair at Triton Invitational

Feb. 9, 2008

SAN DIEGO - The University of Maryland women's water polo team lost a pair of matches to ranked opponents Saturday, losing to No. 6 San Diego, 13-6, and to No. 19 Santa Clara, 8-5, on the opening day of the Triton Invitational.

The Terps (0-2) missed some key opportunities in both matches, but got some early help from their freshmen.

Freshman Maggie Eicks scored a goal in each match, and freshman Allison Beck scored a goal against San Diego.

"Having two of our freshmen score in their first game of the year against a team like that proves that we're going to get a lot of help from them this year," Coach Carl Salyer said after the Terrapins' first match.

The Terrapins also received some key contributions from their veterans, with junior goalie Ashleigh Jobson blocking 14 balls between the two games, and juniors Rachel Jordan and Elizabeth Hopkins each scoring a pair of goals on the day.

The Terps close out play at the Triton Invitational with two games Sunday.
