    March 1, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Shannon Simerly scored a game-high four goals, but it wasn't enough for the University of Maryland women's water polo team, which lost, 10-9, to No. 20 Indiana Saturday evening, during the first day of action at the Elite Six Tournament.

Junior Elizabeth Hopkins' goal with 1:23 remaining knotted the game at 9-all, but Indiana answered on the next possession when Brooke Zimmerman netted the game winner at 1:07. Zimmerman also scored four times for Indiana (7-7), which won twice on the day.

The Terps (10-5), in search of their first win of the season over a ranked opponent, hit the post three times in the final frame. The game was tied 4-all at halftime and Maryland held an 8-6 lead early in the third period when Hopkins scored the second of her three goals.

Maryland couldn't quite get over the hump in its first game of the day against No. 12 Michigan (10-9).

Julie Hyrne scored two goals to lead a balanced offensive attack in the Wolverines' 9-4 victory over the Terps. Rachel Jordan had two goals for the Maryland, which had its six-game winning streak snapped.

Jordan's second goal in the opening moments of the third period cut the deficit to 6-4, but Michigan answered by scoring the game's final three goals.

In the opening game of the two-day, six-team tournament, Indiana scored six second-half goals to fuel a 14-8 victory over Brown (1-5).

In the other game of Saturday's first session, Kirsten Hudson scored five goals to lead No. 15 Hartwick College (5-6) to an 11-8 win over No. 18 Princeton (7-3).

In the afternoon session, Princeton needed overtime to defeat Brown. The Tigers, led by four goals from Lauren Sabb, including the game winner in the extra session, downed the Bears, 10-9.

Michigan followed up with its second victory of the day, edging Hartwick, 10-6.

There are six more games scheduled for Sunday. Maryland faces off against Hartwick at 10:30 a.m. and closes out the tournament with Brown at 4:30 p.m.

Results will be posted periodically during the tournament.
