Terps Water Polo Wins Two on Opening Day of Claremont Colleges Tournament

POMONA, Calif. - Rachel Jordan had three goals to lead the University of Maryland women's water polo team to a 12-6 victory over University of Redlands Saturday afternoon during opening day action at the Claremont Colleges Tournament.
The Terps returned to the pool Saturday night to down Pomona-Pitzer College, 10-8, behind three goals from Blaise Stanicic and two from Bryndis Klein.
Maryland (14-6) won for the fourth straight time and has been victorious in nine of its last 12. The tournament concludes Sunday with the Terps taking on Claremont-Mudds-Scripps at 4:20 p.m. and Cal State San Bernadino at 8:20 p.m. Both of those games will be played at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
The Terps struggled a little out of the gate against Redlands as the game was tied at 3-all after one period of play.
Maryland led 5-3 at halftime and scored seven of the 10 second-half goals to hold off Redlands
"It was a long travel day Friday, but they did a good job of overcoming that," Maryland Coach Carl Salyer said. "Rachel came up with some big goals (vs. Redlands)."
The Terps held just a 5-4 halftime lead over Pomona-Pitzer, but controlled the second-half action. Jordan and Shannon Simerly, who scored twice in the win over Redlands, each had goals in the win over Pomona-Pitzer.
"It was not a pretty game," Salyer said. "We didn't play our best, but well enough to get the win."
Ashleigh Jobson has seven blocks in the win over the Redlands and 12 in Saturday's nightcap against Pomona-Pitzer. Anna Gossett was in net during the fourth quarter of the Redlands game, posting three blocks and surrendering a goal.
