Terps Water Polo Closes Out Tournament Perfectly

March 17, 2008

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Rachel Jordan's scoring outburst helped lead the University of Maryland women's water polo team to a pair of wins Sunday, during the final day of action at the Claremont Colleges tournament.

Jordan had a game-high four goals in Maryland's 12-7 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College (0-9). The junior also scored twice in an 11-7 win over Cal State Bernadino (13-8).

Maryland (16-6) took control early against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, leading 3-1 at the end of the first period and 6-2 at halftime.

"We had a tremendous amount of scoring opportunities, but struggled converting them," Maryland Coach Carl Salyer said. "But we had a good defensive effort for the most part."

Ashleigh Jobson went the whole way in net in both games. She registered 11 blocks against CMS and 12 in the San Bernadino game.

The Terps had a tougher time with CSUSB, which had the game tied at 1-all after one period of play and were down just 5-3 at the break.

But Maryland added three goals in each of the final two periods to close out its sixth-straight victory. Shannon Simerly had a team-high three goals, while Maggie Eicks added a pair.

"We played much better in the second half than we've been playing on this trip which is a good sign," Salyer said. "We took advantage of our opportunities in the offensive end."

Sunday's wins gave the Terps a 4-0 record at the two-day tournament. Maryland has won 11 of its last 14 games.

Maryland defeated University of Redlands, 12-6, and Pomona-Pitzer College, 10-8, Saturday.

The Terps' spring break trip continues Tuesday with games against No. 14 Long Beach State (3 p.m. ET) and Chapman University (9 p.m.).

Maryland concludes its road trip Wednesday, facing No. 11 Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles at 6 p.m.
