LOS ANGELES - Elizabeth Hopkins had three goals, but it wasn't enough for the University of Maryland water polo team which lost 13-7 to No. 11 Loyola Marymount University Wednesday in the Terps' final game of their spring break road trip.
Nicole Hughes (5) and Mary Ann Campos (4) combined to score nine times for the Lions, including seven of the team's eight first-half goals.
LMU (10-8) built an 8-3 lead at the break and held off a third-quarter rally by the Terps (17-8), who closed to within 10-6 on Blaise Stanicic's goal at 1:37.
Hopkins and Campos traded goals early in the fourth quarter, but Maryland was unable to close the gap.
"We played better in the second half, but couldn't overcome the early deficit," Maryland Coach Carl Salyer said.
Eliana Arellano had four blocks for the Lions, while Ashleigh Jobson had eight for the Terps.
Christen Vagts, Rachel Jordan and Allison Beck also scored for the Terrapins. Beck's goal at 1:41 of the first quarter briefly tied the game at 2-all, but the Lions scored twice before the end of the period.
"We actually played fairly well to start the game," Salyer said. "We made some silly mistakes after that and allowed them good opportunities which they took advantage of."
Maryland went an impressive 5-2 on its five-day road trip. The Terps are off until Saturday, March 29 when they face St. Francis (N.Y.) at Bucknell's home facility in Lewisburg, Pa. Maryland faces Bucknell the following day.
