Terps Handle Hoosiers in Opening Round of Eastern Championship

April 25, 2008

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Led by four goals apiece from Rachel Jordan and Shannon Simerly, the sixth-seeded Maryland women's water polo team upset third-seeded No. 17 Indiana, 13-11, in the first round of the CWPA Eastern Division Championship Friday at Michigan's Canham Natatorium.

The Terps (22-14) jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first quarter and didn't look back, as they picked the perfect time to get their first win over a ranked opponent this season.

Maryland was helped out by three goals from Elizabeth Hopkins to reach the semifinal round for the first time in school history. This is the first time the Terps were able to beat the Hoosiers (19-15) in three tries this season, and the first win over Indiana in team history.

Despite letting 11 shots past her, Ashleigh Jobson's 18 blocks were her second-highest total this season.

"We used our mobility and our depth to wear them out," Coach Carl Salyer said. "We were constantly attacking and taking them out of their game plan."

The Terrapins will face No. 14 Hartwick (27-10) Saturday at 8 p.m. Hartwick won the only regular season meeting between the teams, 17-16, in overtime at the Elite Six Tournament. The winner will play in the Eastern Championship Sunday against either No. 11 Michigan or No. 20 Princeton.
