Maryland Water Polo Falls to Hartwick in Semifinals

April 26, 2008

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Maryland women's water polo team lost, 18-11, to No. 14 Hartwick College in its first semifinal appearance at the Eastern Championship Saturday evening at Michigan's Canham Natatorium.

The Terps (22-15) trailed the whole game and just could not retaliate against a relentless offensive attack from the Hawks.

Maryland was led by three goals from Rachel Jordan and a pair each from Blaise Stanicic and Christen Vagts.

Goalie Ashleigh Jobson blocked 11 shots in the game, and Anna Gossett saw time in the net at the end of the match.

"We did a great job of fighting back," Coach Carl Salyer said. "But every time we made a run on them they not only responded with a goal, but hit a few more on top of it."

The Terrapins will face No. 20 Princeton at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the third place game. The Terps split the season series with the Tigers, but fell to them in the first round of the Southern Division Championship.
