Friedgen, O'Donnell Compete in Chick-fil-A Alma Mater

April 30, 2008

GREENSBORO, Ga. - Head football coach Ralph Friedgen and former quarterback Neil O'Donnell carded a 1-under par 71 Tuesday enabling the University of Maryland team to finish eighth at the Chick-fil-A Alma Mater tournament at Reynolds Plantation.

The annual 18-hole event pairs top NCAA head coaches with celebrity alumni from universities across the country. Thirteen twosomes competed for their share of the $350,000 scholarship purse.

The University of South Carolina's Steve Spurrier and Sterling Sharpe carded a 12-under-par 60 to earn a five-stroke victory and the $100,000 first-place scholarship donation.

UCLA and last year's winner, Virginia Tech, tied for second with a 7-under 65. They each earned $45,000 towards their scholarship fund, while Maryland garnered $12,000.

The celebrity round was taped for broadcast and will be aired nationally by CBS at 2 p.m. (ET) on Christmas Day.
