Maryland Water Polo Drops Two in Princeton

April 5, 2008

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Maryland women's water polo team fell on the wrong side of a pair of 10-9 finishes Saturday when facing Brown and Princeton.

The Terps (18-11) held a two-goal lead in the second half of each game, but could not hold off their opponents in a pair of tough losses. With the loss to Princeton, Maryland falls to 1-2 in the CWPA South.

Maryland held a two-goal lead over conference rival Princeton (14-9, 2-1) with five minutes left in regulation, but was unable to hold the lead. Blaise Stanicic had one of her best offensive performances this year, scoring a season-high four goals.

Facing Brown (8-12) in their other game of the day, the Terrapins were led by a pair of goals each from Stanicic and Elizabeth Hopkins. The Bears went on to play another exciting game Saturday winning, 9-8, against No. 20 Bucknell in overtime.

Backup goalie Anna Gossett gave the Terps solid defense in the net, blocking 27 shots between the two games. Starting goalie Ashleigh Jobson was ill and missed the weekend road trip.

Hopkins had four goals on the day, and junior Rachel Jordan scored three times.

"We let them have some easy goals and didn't convert on our opportunities," said Coach Carl Salyer. "We had a couple of really good opportunities to tie the game and just couldn't finish."

The Terps have had three extremely tough losses in a row, losing by one goal in overtime at Bucknell the previous weekend. Maryland looks to bounce back and even its conference record at home against George Washington Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium in College Park.

Maryland is 6-3 at home this season, and had a 9-3 victory at George Washington (7-13, 0-2) earlier this season.
