TAMPA, Fla. - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and State Farm announced the 10-member WBCA/State Farm All-America team on Saturday and the Terrapins' Crystal Langhorne and Kristi Toliver were among the players selected. It is the first time since 1989 Maryland receives two WBCA All-Americans.
Senior Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) becomes the first-ever Terrapin to garner WBCA national honors twice, earning the Association's honor last year. Langhorne is also a three-time Associated Press and United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-American, the only player in program history to earn the recognitions multiple times.
The 2008 ACC Player of the Year and Scholar Athlete of the Year, Langhorne is on pace to become the first player in NCAA history to lead the nation in field goal shooting, converting on 64.7 percent of her field goal attempts. Maryland's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, she is one of only 27 players in NCAA history to amass 2,200 points and 1,200 rebounds. She boasts a 65.2 career shooting percentage, which ranks fourth all-time in NCAA history and is also an ACC record. Starting in the most games of anyone in program history, Langhorne reached double figures in scoring 125 times in her career, which is tied for fourth-most in NCAA history.
Langhorne is Maryland's most decorated women's basketball player. Aside from earning multiple All-American recognitions, she is the program's only four-time All-ACC honoree. She is also one of only 10 players in league history to earn first team nods three times. The 2005 ACC Rookie of the Year, she is also the first Terp to be selected to the ACC All-Tournament team four times. She has been awarded the ACC's Player of the Week a school-record six times in her career. Posting 15 double-doubles this season and 59 for her career, she led the team with 17.3 ppg and 9.4 rpg, both ranked third in the ACC this season.
Junior Kristi Toliver (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) had been selected an All-American by the AP and USBWA earlier this week, as well. All three national honors are the first of her career. This season, she averaged a career-high 17.1 ppg and an ACC-leading 7.5 apg, which also ranked fifth in the nation. She broke the 30-year old ACC season assists mark, dishing out 275 helpers, handing out at least six assists in 29 games this season. Toliver had seven double-doubles this season, all in points and assists. She also set records for made threes in a season and a career, and career free throw shooting percentage, while also surpassing the 1,000-point plateau.
Toliver was named first team All-ACC, after making the third team last year. She earned a spot on the NCAA Spokane Regional All-Tournament team and was the Preseason WNIT Most Valuable Player earlier in the season.
Also named to the 10-player WBCA All-America team were Sylvia Fowles of LSU, Erlana Larkins of North Carolina, Angel McCoughtry of Louisville, Courtney Paris of Oklahoma, Candace Parker of Tennessee, Candics Wiggins of Stanford and Connecticut's Renee Montgomery and Maya Moore. Wiggins also won the State Farm Wade Trophy, presented to the national player of the year.
Maryland boasted two All-Americans in 1989 when Vicky Bullett and Deanna Tate were both selected by the WBCA. The Terps went 33-4 this season, advancing to the Elite Eight for the second time in three years.
