BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Soon-to-be Maryland freshman Lynetta Kizer led the U18 USA Women's Basketball team to an opening-game victory at the FIBA America U18 World Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Wednesday. Led by Kizer's 13 points, the U.S. overpowered Venezuela, 112-49.
Lynetta Kizer (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) scored a team-high tying 13 points off the bench and in 12 minutes of playing time. She went 4-for-5 from the floor, also going 5-for-7 from the free throw line. She handed out a pair of assists, had a block and a steal, as well.
The Americans shot 60.5 percent for the game, outrebounding the Venezuelans, 44-27. They also assisted on 31 of the team's 46 shots in the game.
“We can feed off this win, but we have to remember that there are much tougher teams out there,” said Kizer after the game to usabasketball.com. “It feels good to win big, but we have to keep working if we want to win the gold medal. We worked really hard to get here and we can't afford to lose focus.”
The 2008 zone qualifier is being played in a round-robin format, with the top four finishing teams earning a berth into the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship. The USA next plays Canada on July 24 at 3 p.m. local time (4 p.m. EDT), followed by Puerto Rico at 5 p.m. on July 25, Brazil at 3 p.m. on July 26 and host-Argentina on July 27 at 7 p.m.
