COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With the start of preseason camp just more than a week away, the Maryland football team recently culminated 12 weeks of summer workouts by undergoing strength and conditioning testing.
Director of strength and conditioning Dwight Galt oversaw testing of strength index, power clean, squat, bench press, vertical jump, and conditioning for more than 100 players as they prepare for the rapidly-approaching 2008 football season.
Offensive lineman Phil Costa set an all-time team record with a clean from the floor of 435 pounds, and defensive lineman Dean Muhtadi power cleaned 390 pounds, a record for his position. Offensive lineman Bruce Campbell, only a sophomore, posted one of the most impressive bench presses by lifting 455 pounds - a 35-pound improvement from spring.
Additionally, defensive back Jeff Allen, linebacker Rick Costa, defensive lineman Deege Galt, tight end Tommy Galt, tight end Dan Gronkowski, defensive back Jamari McCollough, defensive lineman Jeremy Navarre and offensive lineman Edwin Williams were among the players to put forth outstanding effort, according to Dwight Galt. In all, 37 players received an evaluation rating of `excellent'.
"We had by far our best summer testing period in the weight room," Dwight Galt said. "Almost everybody got [personal records] in most of their lifts. To be able to run as hard as we ran this summer and still do that well in the weight room is a real credit to how hard they worked."
The team will enjoy a week of relaxation before the start of preseason camp on Aug. 4. The season opener is Aug. 30, when the Terps play host to Delaware.
"My staff and I do a lot with the kids for this seven-month period of development, but starting next Sunday, we turn the team over to Coach (Ralph) Friedgen and his staff," Dwight Galt said. "They've always been involved, but now their role becomes primary and we're about supporting our endeavors on the field."
Season tickets for this fall's seven-game home slate start as low as $189 and are on sale through the Maryland Athletics Ticket Office. Call 1-800-IM-A-TERP or click here for information.
