TIANJIN, China - Maryland soccer alums Maurice Edu and Robbie Rogers helped lead the U.S. Men's Olympic Soccer Team to a 1-0 victory against Japan in the team's opener at the 2008 Olympic Games.
Edu, who started at center back for the U.S., solidified the defense throughout the match, as Japan only managed two shots on goal. Stuart Holden netted the lone goal of the contest in the 47th minute as 37,177 fans looked on at Tianjin Olympic Stadium.
With the win, the U.S. sits in first place in Group B with three points. The U.S. next faces European U-21 champions Netherlands on Aug. 10.
