Hollandsworth Sparks Terps at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. - Freshman Jessica Hollandsworth fired a 1-over-par 73 and moved up the leader board Monday in the second round of the Cougar Classic women's golf tournament being hosted by the College of Charleston.
As a team, Maryland fired a 308 in the second round to finish the day in 17th place with a 611 total. The Terps were only 10 shots out of 11th in a tightly packed group in the middle of the 22-team field.
Hollandsworth's two-round total of 149 placed her in a tie for 32nd individually. Sophomore Hilary Lawson and senior Lara Peffley, tied for the Terps after the opening round, matched scores again on Monday with 77s that put them tied for 50th at 152. Lauren Varnas was tied for 89th at 158 and Kerry Connolly shot an 84 on Monday for a 174 total.
Georgia scorched the par-72 Yeamans Hall layout for a team total of 279 and takes a 13-stroke lead into the final day with a 567 total. The Bulldogs started the day tied with Virginia, but the Cavaliers shot 292 in the second round to remain in second place. Alabama shot 288 for a 581 total and third place.
The Bulldogs' rally was paced by Mallory Hetzel, who followed her opening-round 68 with a 69 on Monday. Her 137 total was 7-under-par and led a group of four players by three strokes.
The final round of the Cougar Classic begins on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8:45.
