GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of Maryland punter Travis Baltz was named Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Baltz shared the honor with Florida State's Michael Ray Garvin, who returned a kickoff for a score in Saturday's win over Colorado.
Baltz punted seven times for an average of 43.9 yards per attempt in Saturday's win over No. 20 Clemson. Three of those punts landed inside the Tigers' 20-yard line and his hang time allowed just two returns for 11 yards.
The sophomore from Whitehouse, Ohio, was especially sharp in the first half when the Terps found themselves behind. His first punt went just 36 yards, but was not returned. His second was fumbled and set up a Maryland field goal. His final punt of the half came from his own end zone, traveled 48 yards and was returned just five yards. He also had a 53-yarder in the second half.
Baltz currently ranks second in the ACC and 13th nationally in punting average (44.3 ypp).
Also honored this week by the ACC were North Carolina quarterback Cameron Sexton (offensive back), center Ryan Shuman of Virginia Tech (offensive lineman), linebacker Michael Tauiliili of Duke (defensive lineman/MLB), safety Trimane Goddard of North Carolina (defensive back) and Montel Harris of Boston College (rookie).
Maryland wide receiver Danny Oquendo was nominated for the offensive back award, while linebacker Alex Wujciak was nominated for the defensive lineman honor.
The Terps, who are receiving votes this week in each national poll, play at Virginia Saturday (7 p.m. ESPNU/Terrapin Sports Radio Network).
