Terps Women's Soccer Evens Record With 2-0 Win Over Temple

Sept. 7, 2008

Final Stats

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - First-career goals by sophomore Colleen Deegan and freshman Danielle Schulmann propelled the University of Maryland women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Temple Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field.

Maryland dominated the match throughout, but was unable to put a goal on the board in the opening half. That changed in the second half as the Terps broke through in the 56th minute.

On the Terps' second-straight corner kick senior defender Aimee Bresani sent the ball low to the near post where it skirted the end line and deflected off the post to Deegan, who finished the opportunity into the lower right corner of the Owl net.

Maryland continued to pressure the Owls and eventually picked up an insurance goal in the 77th minute on one of the nicest goals of the season so far. Freshman Sade Ayinde showed patience with the ball in the back for the Terps, letting her teammates work to get free from their defenders, before sending a pass down the left side where freshman Dominique Vellutato made a run. Vellutato beat her defender to the ball and sent a picture-perfect serve into the box. Schulmann got free from her defender and was able to finish into the right side of the Temple net with a hard right-legged volley.

The Maryland defense, which saw junior Mary Casey making her first start of the season in goal, allowed only two Temple shots on the afternoon, one of which coming on a free kick. For the match, Maryland out-shot the Owls 27-2. Temple goalkeeper Kara Williams kept the Owls in the game with nine saves.

"I'm happy for our kids," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. "They've been working so hard - the results just haven't shown. We need to build on this and prepare well for a big weekend at Virginia."

Maryland (2-2-1) hits the road for the first time this season next weekend when it travels to Charlottesville, Va., for the Virginia Soccer Classic. The Terps open the tournament with Dartmouth on Friday, Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m.
