COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Riding the momentum of a pair of road ACC victories last weekend, the University of Maryland wrestling team returns home this week for Friday's highly-anticipated matchup with in-state rival Navy. Match time is set for 7 p.m. and the meet will be broadcast live on the Internet at ACCSelect.com.
The Terrapins (6-7-1) and Midshipmen (5-7) engaged in a memorable dual last season in Annapolis, Md., as the Terps broke a 22-year winless streak at Navy and an 11-year drought to the Midshipmen, overall, winning 21-18 in a clash of top-25 opponents.
"This should be a great match. Navy has a great team," Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy said. "I expect a great crowd and a lot of energy. This type of match is great because the fans will get to see two local programs battle. We have a little momentum building, so I hope to continue that. It's also great to be back home. The guys love competing for our fans."
The Terps come into the match with wins in three of their last four duals, including conference victories at NC State and Duke last weekend. Navy, on the other hand, has lost its last four duals, including a 20-18 defeat at the hands of NC State the same day Maryland defeated the Wolfpack.
Both Maryland and Navy boast three top-20 grapplers as of the last InterMat rankings. However, none of Navy's ranked wrestlers have competed in recent duals.
Maryland's ranked grapplers are all schedules to compete: No. 8 Steven Bell (133), No. 13 Alex Krom (141) and No. 10 Hudson Taylor (197).
Admission to this event is free. Please check umterps.com for updated matchup information and rankings.
