COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The postseason awards continue to come in for Maryland women's soccer goalkeeper Mary Casey. This time, the junior is being lauded by the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) for the combination of her work in the classroom and her success on the field.
Casey, a kinesiology major with a 3.956 GPA, was named a second team NSCAA Scholar All-American and a first team All-East Scholar. Casey will formally receive her honor at the 2009 All-American luncheon in St. Louis, Mo., on Friday, January 16th.
After starting the first four matches of the season as a center back, Casey, a native of Centreville, Va., took over the starting keeper spot for the Terps in the fifth game of the 2008 season and immediately made an impact. She finished the season ranked sixth in the ACC with a 0.90 goals against average. Casey also finished fourth in save percentage (.800) and sixth in saves per game (3.38).
"Mary has earned just one `B' in her five semesters at Maryland. She is just business, on and off the field. This honor puts Mary in a very select group of individuals - those who excel at an elite level in the classroom and on the field," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky.
Earlier this season Casey was named to the All-ACC first team and was a second team All-Mid-Atlantic selection by the NSCAA. Casey has already been selected as the Terps' team captain for the 2009 season.
