WASHINGTON, D.C. - The No. 6 Maryland men's soccer team used an inspired effort Tuesday to edge past No. 16 Georgetown, 2-1, at North Kehoe Field in Washington, D.C.

Maryland (8-3-1) got on the board early when Drew Yates tacked on his third goal of the year in the eighth minute. Yates took a ball off a scramble in the box off his chest and one-timed it with his left foot for an early Terrapin lead.

Kaoru Forbess helped set up Maryland's second goal of the contest, which came a mere four minutes after Yates' strike found the back of the net. Forbess chipped a ball in to Maryland leading goal-scorer Jason Herrick in the center of the field and Herrick finessed the ball to the outermost corner of the goal past diving Hoya goalkeeper Mark Wilber. The score is Herrick's fifth of the year and his first since his game-winner against Saint Peter's on Sept. 22.

The Terrapin attack continued to challenge Georgetown's defense throughout the first half with a pair of close calls from Forbess and Herrick. A strike by Forbess following a Yates serve that crossed past Matt Oduaran went high at 15:30. Around the 30-minute mark, Forbess drove the ball and dished it to Herrick, which seemed to mirror his first goal, but this time his shot went just wide of the far post.

Georgetown (8-4-1) cut the lead in half when Jimmy Nealis laced a shot in traffic from 15 yards out that went past Zac MacMath to his right at 31:19.

The Terrapin defense thwarted off 12 Hoya shots in the second half to preserve its third-straight win. Maryland played with up to five freshmen on the field at one time.

The game was the first following an accident involving starting Maryland defender Alex Lee on Saturday. The sophomore from Rockville, Md., was released from the hospital hours prior to kickoff.

"The emotional energy that they expended just showed the type of character we have on this team," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "I couldn't be more proud of them. They've come together and made the Maryland soccer family proud. This win is dedicated to Alex."

Maryland players donned white wrist bands with `A.L. #18' written in black marker for their injured teammate.

The Terps return to Atlantic Coast Conference action Friday night with a match at Clemson.
